2026/27 Season
The excursion season in El Chaltén runs from October to mid-April. Book activities with limited capacity in advance, especially between December and February. You can do the trekking to Laguna de los Tres opposite Fitz Roy, sail to the Viedma Glacier or experience the destination's only ice trekking experience in the Cagliero Glacier.

El Chaltén
The Village
El Chaltén was founded in 1985 and is the youngest town in Argentina. It is located within Los Glaciares National Park, in the Río de las Vueltas Valley, and is the only destination in the country where high-mountain trails begin on foot from the last houses.
Mount Fitz Roy
At 3,405 meters, Mount Chaltén dominates the valley landscape. Its original name in the Tehuelche language means "smoking mountain," due to the clouds that almost always shroud its summit. It is the iconic landmark of the region and the destination of the trek to Laguna de los Tres.
Los Glaciares National Park
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981, it protects the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and more than 300 glaciers. The northern sector, accessible from El Chaltén, features mountain trails and hanging glaciers such as Piedras Blancas and Cagliero.
Cerro Torre
At 3,128 meters, it's lower than Fitz Roy, but its silhouette is even more dramatic: an almost vertical granite spire crowned by an ice mushroom formed by the moisture from the Pacific. It can be seen from the trail to Laguna Torre.
