It is located in northwestern Santa Cruz province, within Los Glaciares National Park, in the Río de las Vueltas valley and at the foot of the Fitz Roy massif.

A town founded by a border

Its origin was not touristic but geopolitical: it was created to consolidate the Argentine presence in a border dispute area with Chile, the same conflict that affected the Lago del Desierto and that was only resolved in 1994. Only afterwards did tourism become the main activity.

That explains several things about its appearance: the layout is recent and orderly, the infrastructure grew quickly and reactively, and the permanent population is small compared to the flow of visitors in high season.

The national trekking capital

El Chaltén received its name for a specific reason: the most iconic trails in the northern part of the National Park begin just meters from the last houses. There's no need to book long transfers or get up too early to reach the viewpoints of Fitz Roy or Cerro Torre, something unusual in mountain destinations.

That closeness defines the rhythm of the town. People get up early, go for walks, and return at dusk. The shops, restaurants, and breweries follow that schedule.

What to expect from the people

It's small and can be explored on foot in a short time. San Martín Avenue is where most of the services are concentrated: agencies, restaurants, accommodations, and shops selling mountain clothing.

There are some limitations to keep in mind. Banking services are limited, so it's best to bring cash and not rely on a single payment method. Cell phone service is available in the village but disappears as soon as you start hiking. And during peak season, accommodations fill up quickly, so booking in advance is essential.

The weather

The wind is a constant. El Chaltén is exposed to westerly winds that cross the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and the gusts can be intense even in summer. Conditions change several times a day: it's common to leave in sunshine and return to rain.

This variability has a practical consequence for the trip: it is advisable to have at least three days and not leave the most important activity until the end, because it is likely to lose a day or two.

Beyond the trails

In addition to trekking, the area offers glacier tours. Viedma y Vespignani, adventure activities such as Ice Trek to the Cagliero Glacier and the rafting on the Río de las Vueltas, and field experiences in Bonanza Ranch, with horseback riding and Patagonian cuisine.

How to get there

The usual access is from El Calafate, about three hours away via Route 40 and Route 23, with the classic stop at La Leona. The nearest airport is El Calafate. We offer the transfer between both locations door-to-door or regular bus service with reception at destination.

Plan your visit

Check out the guide What to do in El Chaltén or the complete catalog of excursions.

El Chaltén: el pueblo más joven de la Patagonia El Chaltén se fundó en 1985, lo que lo convierte en una de las localidades más jóvenes de Argentina.
